President Reuven Rivlin met with Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong today in a meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between Israel and China in the science and technological sectors.

“You have an important and central role in relations between Israel and China and it is important for us to have you here and to talk about deepening and expanding the relationship,” Rivlin said in greetings to Yandong. “I want to extend my great appreciation to the president and prime minister of China.”

“China takes Israel very seriously,” Yandong told Rivlin.

Recalling her previous visit in 2014, she said that she had been deeply impressed by Israel’s social and economic achievements and the goodwill towards China by the people of Israel. She had returned with a very warm feeling towards Israel, she said.

Liu characterized her current visit as “a very important mission.”

Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu expressed gratitude and appreciation to Yandong for her determination and commitment to complete a free trade agreement with Israel during a meeting at the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

“I was very glad to hear today from Vice Premier Liu that China is ready to start negotiating for free-trade with Israel,” Netanyahu remarked. “This is a significant development and we are ready to do it immediately.”
