chris-christieNew Jersey – Republican Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday called Assembly Democrats “skunks at the garden party” for thwarting his income tax cut plan, but they say he’s only interested in lining the pockets of the rich.

Meanwhile, Christie seemed to endorse the property tax credit plan proposed by Senate Democrats.

Thursday’s developments happened with less than a month for the governor and Legislature to agree on a state budget.

The war-of-words between the governor and Assembly Democrats was the latest in an ongoing feud over giving residents a tax break. Christie has wanted to cut income taxes by 10 percent, and Democrats have been seeking property tax relief.

Christie’s comments came during a town hall meeting in Lyndhurst.

The Assembly’s plan calls for a 20 percent credit – 25 percent for seniors and the disabled – that would be partially paid for by the state’s 16,000 wealthiest earners.

Christie has vetoed the millionaires’ tax twice previously and has vowed to do so again.

Senate President Steve Sweeney’s hybrid plan calls for a property tax credit for those earning up to $250,000 and on the first $10,000 in property taxes paid. The maximum credit would be $1,000.

All the plans would be phased in over four years.

Speaking to senior citizens in Trenton on Thursday, Christie said, “We want to cut your taxes this year, and we want you to get a 10 percent credit on your income taxes toward your property taxes.”

He asked the seniors not to endorse the Assembly plan because it includes a millionaires’ tax.

In Lyndhurst, Christie compared his and the Sweeney’s proposal to “tomato, tomahto – it’s about the same thing.” He said there was room for compromise between the two ideas, while Assembly Democrats are “on an island – Fantasy Island.”

Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald said Christie’s fiscal policies are hurting the state and causing the economic recovery to lag.

“The governor’s policies have failed,” Greenwald said, “and if he doesn’t change course soon and join us in our efforts to help the middle class, the damage will get even worse.”
