Christie: Climate Change is Real

christie4NJ Governor Chris Christie made clear he falls in the Jon Huntsman camp as opposed to the Rick Perry camp on the scientific-political issue of the week in the Republican primary:

In vetoing a bill (S2946) that would have required New Jersey to stay in a regional program intended to curb greenhouse gases – a program Christie plans to leave by the end of the year – the governor said “climate change is real.”

He added that “human activity plays a role in these changes” and that climate change is “impacting our state.”

Christie’s words are his strongest to date in regards to climate change, a hot-button issue among the same conservatives nationwide who are clamoring for the governor to enter the 2012 presidential race.

Christie’s come full circle on the issue. Last year, he told a town hall audience in Toms River he was skeptical climate change is the result of human activity. He backed off those comments at a conference of environmentalists in May and agreed to meet with climate scientists for a lesson in global warming.

  1. Good for him. Finally a scientifically literate statement by a popular Republican figure. So why isn’t he running for President? Instead we get Rick Perry, whose state is booming economically from government jobs and tries to pass it off as his own “kochi v’otzem yadi.” Is it lack of logic or a deliberate “misstatement?”

  2. So Christie gets paid to talk? That is leadership? Why are not jobs being created? What is being done to encourage businesses to come to NJ? What is being done to help businesses in NJ stay in business? What is being done to help NJ students afford college? What is being done to make it affordable to live in NJ?

Christie has done ZERO to improve life in the Garden State!

  3. Oldtimer, I can think of one very good reason for him not to run: he hasn’t finished his first term, has he? I think that the GOP might be gun shy of trying that again.

  4. #4 – it isn’t the GOP, it’s the voters who decide in the primaries (although the people who give donations decide who can afford to make it to the primaries). The only other rational person running is Romney, and he’s going to have trouble with Evangelicals over being a Mormon. Unfortunately, Christie is overweight, and it has been shown that since TV took over how good-looking you and how personable you are have a crucial impact on your electability. Prejudice against over-weight people is the dirty secret of our times. It shuts people out of jobs, non-local elective office and a lot of other things too. When was the last time we had a President who wasn’t thin or at least fit?
