schumerNY Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand never broke a sweat, cruising to victory in a tough election year. An elated Schumer thanked New Yorkers for the “sacred opportunity” to serve another six years.”I promise you I will not let you down,” he told supporters gathered at a midtown hotel after defeating GOPer Jay Townsend.

Gillibrand, who was appointed to the job by Gov. Paterson to replace Hillary Clinton, told the same crowd it was “time to end business as usual” in Washington.

“I will fight for your families as hard as I fight for my own,” she vowed.

Veteran Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, however, was sweating out a rare challenge last night from local Nassau pol Francis Becker, who hoped to ride a nationwide GOP wave to victory.

“Carolyn is in big trouble,” said a source close to the 14-year incumbent. “She’s had a free ride until now and never had a real challenger.”

Turnout on Long Island was 2-to-1 in favor of Republicans in some areas. The strong GOP turnout also had first-term Democratic Long Island Rep. Tim Bishop on the ropes.

Rep. Pete King (R-L.I.), who stands to gain a powerful committee chairmanship if the GOP recaptures the House, said Obama was a burden on Long Island.

“Democratic incumbents would have been much better off if the President stayed in the White House rather than campaigning,” said King.

The ballyhooed GOP landslide bypassed the city, where Democratic voters were outpacing Republicans.

  1. I really don’t align myself with his politics, but he must be the only one in office who actually looks like he’s working for a living.
