muni-meterNew York – Tired of running back to your parking spot to put money in the meter? Well, there’s an app for that.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg unveiled a pilot program Tuesday that will allow drivers to add parking time remotely by using a smartphone app, the internet or by telephone.

Motorists will also receive a text message or email alerting them their time is about to expire. They will then be able to purchase additional time and extend their parking periods.

“You’re sitting in the restaurant and it’ll tell you you’re about to run out of time,” Bloomberg said. “You can either pay your bill and go back to the car or you can say, ‘No, I want to re-up,” hit a few buttons and that’s the great beauty of all this.

Drivers will also be able to spend less time hunting for a parking space with the city’s new real-time curbside parking availability map that can be viewed on the Internet, smartphones and tablet devices.

“These new initiatives are just the latest examples of our work to bring parking and driving in New York City into the 21st century,” Bloomberg said.

“Parking is easier and more convenient when you know where to look for a space, and when you can pay with a click instead of fumbling for change,” said Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. “Innovative technologies like these can help make one of the basic facts of city life a little easier while making our streets and commercial districts even more accessible.”

The three-month pilot program is being tested in the Belmont section of the Bronx which is one of the most ticketed neighborhoods in the city.
