powellOn Face the Nation this morning, former Secretary of State Colin Powell chastised the GOP for their Voter ID laws and lack of minority outreach in general, telling host Bob Schieffer that the party is imperiling its electoral victories through unnecessarily punitive legislation and messaging.

“Many states are putting in place procedures and legislation that in some ways makes it a little harder to vote,” Powell said. “You need a photo ID. Well, you didn’t need a photo ID for decades before, is it really necessary now? They claim that there’s widespread abuse and voter fraud, but nothing documents that, nothing substantiates that. There isn’t widespread abuse.”

“These kinds of procedures that are being put into place, to slow the process down and make it likely that fewer Hispanics and African Americans might vote, are going to backfire, because these people are going to come out and do what they have to do in order to vote, and I encourage that,” he said.

“Here’s what I say to my Republican friends,” Powell said. “The country is becoming more diverse. Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, African Americans are going to constitute the majority of the population in another generation. You say you want to reach out. You say you want to have a new message. You say you want to see if you can bring some of these voters to the Republican side. This is not the way to do it. The way to do it is to make it easier for them to vote, and to give them something to vote for, that they can believe in.”

“It’s not enough to say we just have to have a new message,” Powell concluded. “We have to have a new substance to that new message.”

  1. Canada has mandatory 2 pcs govt issued govt ID for voting and pre-registration to vote.
Canada actually has a much HIGHER rate of people voting than the US. It is easy and quick to vote.
It is simple logic to have voter ID.

  2. You need ID to buy beer isn’t voting more important? If you drink too much beer you may just kill someone but because of no ID Obama was elected. Which is worse?

  3. Why aren’t Republicans running Colin Powell for president instead of the clown show it looks like it’s going to be? Eisenhower would weep at the current lineup. Where’s a constructive vision? Not just temper tantrums and “No!” screamed at the top of the lungs.

  4. Colin Powell won’t run for personal reasons. I’d be happy if we could just synchronize all the voter rolls. We had a lot of Snow Birds who voted here in Florida as well as their actual state of residence. When it is caught the media downplays the news because it doesn’t fit their desired narrative.

  5. “It is simple logic to have voter ID.”

And in fact numerous states have voter ID laws that were instituted to help insure that voters are whom they say they are. These laws are not about that; they were passed by Republican legislatures to prevent Democrats from voting. The documentation to get the voter ID is time consuming to get and often costly, effectively a poll tax which the US Constitution forbids for federal elections.

“because of no ID Obama was elected.”

Right wing Republicans still remain in denial that the voters rejected their policies and candidates. The election was close in no state except for Florida.

  6. Collin Powell realizes that the guy he endorsed twice would not be president if there would be voter ID laws. How many people by the name of “Micky Mouse” were found to be registered voters? 16!

Powell has left the republican party a while ago. He does not seek their benefit.

  7. If a person doesn’t have ID in this country they must be living in a box under a bridge, for you need ID for everything most of these days. So if there is no ID where have they been all this time? This solves the problem I guess, you can’t vote 6 times for a candidate, and maybe that is the complaint. The fraud that was protrayed in the last election was massive.
