Rav Yom Tov Maya wanted to write a Sefer Torah but lacked the means to even begin. Seven years ago, he began collecting bottles for recycling to finance the project.
Eight months ago, he donated what he collected to the Kol Beramah radio station on condition that they finance the rest of the project and find a suitable shul for the finished Sefer Torah.
Out of 1,326 shuls that submitted requests, it was granted to the Toras Chesed Shul in Be’er Sheva led by Rav David Gavrieli. Rav Maya dedicated it in memory of his nephew Yaron Barmi, a victim of the Carmel fire of Chanukah 2011.
