nypdPolice killed at least 385 people across the United States in the the first five months of 2015, according to an extensive report published yesterday by The Washington Post. That amounts to more than two people a day and is more than twice the rate of fatal police shootings the federal government has tracked over the last decade.

Officials concede, however, that that count is incomplete.

Despite the national attention on the fatal shootings of minorities by police officers, about half of those killed by cops were white, and the other half were minorities. However, among unarmed victims, more than two-thirds were black of Hispanic, and blacks were, overall, killed three times more often than whites or other minorities. The vast majority—some 80 percent—of those killed were armed with a potentially deadly weapon, the report states, while about 16 percent were either unarmed or carrying a toy that was mistaken for a gun. Nearly a quarter of the victims were identified as mentally ill. Most were poor and had a history of run-ins with law enforcement.

  1. Thanks to the police department we have this many dangerous elements eliminated, the lesson learned is a abiding by the laws is conducive to longevity!!!

  2. Note that a quarter – 25% of those killed were mentally ill. (Remember Gid’on Busch?) I recently read about one mother who called the police to help bring her schizophrenic son in from the cold. The boy was swinging a broomstick, and the police killed him. In fear for their lives, of course. Those broomsticks can be deadly, much more dangerous than guns.

#2 – it’s in the article. One of the many reasons we are no longer considered a moral leader by many other countries.

#1 – A twelve year old boy is a “dangerous element?” You must be afraid of your own shadow.

  3. Of the 365 men: 171 were white, 100 black, 78 hispanic.
And how many other people have been killed so far this year?
How many from drivers or DUI?
How many other people were killed NOT by police?
Throwing numbers around means very little without putting it in context and showing what else is out there.
