Those are some tricky government workers! Since the 1980s, the U.S. government has collected over $30 billion from nuclear power operators with the intent to use that money on future storage of spent fuel. However, due to political roadblocks, the permanent storage site at Yucca Mountin in Nevada was never built, which mean that the $750 million a year the Department of Energy was receiving went to a program that didn’t exist.
In addition, operators of nuclear power plants have been paying for the costs of storing their own waste while contributing to the future permanent solution. Read more at the Wall Street Journal.
