British Virgin Atlantic Airline pulled “Palestinian couscous salad” from its menu in response to complaints from pro-Israelis and replaced it with “couscous salad.” This then triggered a flood of complaints from pro-Palestinians.

“We’d like to reassure all customers that our sole intention was to bring new flavors on board, and never to cause offense through the naming or renaming of the dish,” the airline said.

A blogger pointed out that couscous is neither Israeli or Palestinian, but apparently originated in eastern to northern Africa, where Berbers used it as early as the 7th century. It is still a traditional North African delicacy.

In December, a celebrity chef sparked an uproar by captioning a photo of hummus and stuffed grape leaves, “Israeli nite.”
