The Justice Department has been asked to open a criminal investigation into whether Hillary Clinton mismanaged classified government information on a private email account she used while serving as secretary of state, the New York Times reported on Thursday, citing senior government officials.
Two inspector generals made the request following a June 29 memo by the inspectors general for the State Department and the intelligence agencies that said the Democratic presidential contender’s private account included “hundreds of potentially classified emails.”
It’s still unclear if information included in the emails were marked as classified by the State Department when Clinton sent or received them. Clinton maintains no classified information was handled on the account. The Justice Department has not decided if it will launch an investigation, senior officials said.
