In a disturbing development, a significant number of religious soldiers in the IDF have been denied permission to grow a beard by their adjutant officer, Rabbi Avi Shayish, a divisional chaplain in the IDF reserves and the rov of Rechovot’s Orot Hanan group, told Arutz Sheva.

Rabbi Shayish said that about 18 months ago, the head of the human resources branch of the IDF decided that soldiers are to be clean-shaven, and that permission to grow a beard would come from adjutant officers instead of the military rabbinate.

Many soldiers are being denied the right to grow a beard by their adjutant officers, Rabbi Shayish said.

  1. If you miss the last 3 words in the first sentence, you’d think that Rabbi Shayish is the adjutant officer denying them permission. It could be much clearer, e.g.:

Rabbi Avi Shayish, a divisional chaplain in the IDF reserves and the rov of Rechovot’s Orot Hanan group, told Arutz Sheva of a disturbing development in the IDF: Permission to grow a beard now comes from adjutant officers instead of the military rabbinate, and a significant number of religious soldiers have been denied permission to grow a beard by their adjutant officer.
