Gov. Cuomo announced Monday that he plans to ban plastic bags statewide — right after Democratic challenger Cynthia Nixon attended an Albany rally demanding he do more for the environment.

“The blight of plastic bags takes a devastating toll on our streets, our water and our natural resources, and we need to take action to protect our environment,” Cuomo said.

He introduced a bill that would ban single-use, plastic carryout bags, while exempting trash bags and bags used to wrap food such as fruit and sliced meats.

  1. We have that stupid law in Los Angeles. A plastic bag no costs you 10 to 15 cents each. The stores are making a fortune on selling these bags. If you save them, they clutter your car trunk and your home. What a stupid law!

  2. Senator Felder must do everything possible to sound the alarm and curtail this bill from passing.
Crazy liberals! Coumo is not going shopping for an entire family! He has no idea what its like.

  3. I usually do my Shabbos shopping on my way home from work on Wednesday or Thursday nights. A five-cent fee for bags would be annoying, but I could live with an extra 40-50 cent cost to my weekly shopping (yes, I actually shlep about 8-10 bags full of groceries home). An outright ban however would be a major imposition as I’d now have to go home first, pick up a collection of (canvas?) reusable bags and then return to the avenue to shop.
Gov. Cuomo, please have some rachmones and apply common sense to the plight of everyman instead of the hardcore environmentalist minority.
