Daily News to NYC: Mind Your Own Tznius Business

williamsburg1From a NY Daily News editorial:

The city’s Human Rights Commission has overreached badly in reading discriminatory intent into the straightforward language of signs that lay out a dress code for a few stores in one shopping strip in Brooklyn.

The signs, since removed, on seven storefronts on Lee Ave., the main shopping stretch of the Satmar Hasidic enclave of Williamsburg, stated – in English and Spanish – that shoes, shirts and long sleeves are required, and shorts and low-cut necklines are not allowed. That’s it.

Yet, the Commission sees the notices violating Section 8-107(4)(1) of the Administrative Code of New York, which prohibits a store from “directly or indirectly” denying service based upon a person’s “actual or perceived race, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, disability, marital status, partnership status, sexual orientation or alienage or citizenship status.” Read more here.

  1. They added in their negative opinion about Metzitza B’peh. Which leaves me to conclude that the Daily News is asvanti-Semetic as they’ve always been. They wrote this article to gain credability in their anti Metzitza B’peh campain.

  2. When a person is not allowed to go swimming without a bathing cap in a public pool, is this discrimitary too, for it (Usually)implys that ladies with long hair need to wear a bathing cap.

  4. If I were the store owners, I would seriously consider challenging this decision legally. Not so much for my own self, but for the klal.

  5. To “Truth Time”:

The truth is that the store owners are not telling anyone what to wear. Not at all. They are merely stating rules for their stores. Anyone over ten years old should be able to discern this simple fact.

Yes, how in the world are these signs “discrimination”?????? They are NOT saying to ANYONE “You cannot come in here”! Instead, all that they are saying TO EVERY PERSON OUT THERE is: “You CAN come in here but please dress accordingly!” As the full editorial in the NY Daily News pointed out, countless fancy restaurants have even stricter dress requirements.

  7. (continuation of my previous comment #10)

This issue of discrimination has certainly become a real excessive obsession. Look at this case. Certain people are so, so, so, very worried about the supposed “rights” of a customer to be able to go wherever he or she wants AND to be able to wear whatever he or she wants.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE STORE OWNER???? DOESN’T HE HAVE THE “RIGHT” TO NOT HAVE TO LOOK AT PEOPLE WHO ARE DRESSED IMPROPERLY???? DOESN’T HE HAVE THE RELIGIOUS “RIGHT” TO SAY THAT THE RULES OF HIS RELIGION PROHIBIT HIM FROM LOOKING AT PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT DRESSED PROPERLY????

  8. Most people may not be aware that we all discriminate. We discriminate in whom we deal with, whom our friends are, whom we marry, which school we go to or send our children to. Discrimination absolutely cannot be avoided.

The only problem regarding discrimination is when it is based on baseless hatred and causes the victim of such a problem. Therefore, laws are passed in the USA to try to stop that.

This has nothing to do with what is going on here.
