David Dinkins: Voters Should Vote for Senate Candidate Who Looks ‘More Like Us’

david-dinkinsFormer NYC Mayor David Dinkins encouraged voters to embrace a state Senate candidate because he looks “more like us.” “It’s important, it is so very important, particularly for the people of this district who vote on Tuesday to recognize how important it is to understand that the city is changing,” Dinkins said in his endorsement of state Senate candidate Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat on Thursday.

“Most people in the city are going to look more like us than others and that’s just a fact,” Dinkins said.

Espaillat opponent Mark Levine, who is white, yesterday called on Espaillat, who is Hispanic, to denounce the divisive comment.

Espaillat did not repudiate Dinkins’ words.

“Mayor Dinkins is one of New York’s finest public servants, and he’s built his career around the principle that communities of different ethnic and economic backgrounds must work together if we want to bring about long-term change,” Espaillat said in a statement.

Levine, who called Dinkins’ comment “insulting to the district and electorate,” also took issue with its timing.

“The fact that they were delivered on the first day of Rosh Hashana added to their inappropriateness,” Levine said.

Espaillat and Levine are both frontrunners in the race to fill Attorney General hopeful state Senator Eric Schneiderman’s seat. The district includes the diverse population of the Upper West Side, Washington Heights, and Inwood, in Manhattan and Riverdale, in the Bronx.

  1. Voters should vote for candidates that “look like us” ??? Exactly what do you look like, Honorable Dinkins? Like a Watusi, Pygmy, or possibly O.J.Simpson ? Is that what you see when you look into a mirror ? If your candidates perform like Obama, good luck to you !!!!

  2. #1 – Jews say it all the time, especially us frum types. Why all the efforts to get frum board of ed members, city council members, etc. Why all the outrage when somebody who “lookes like us” – that is, is Jewish – does things that the frum community doesn’t like – Sen. Schumer, for example?

To work for those who look like us because they dress a certain way and believe certain things, and then to complain when members of other groups do the same, is a particularly stupid form of hypocrisy.

  3. Do you believe in the one man one vote form of government?

Attorneys SD-59 Domagalski, SD-46 Breslin, SD-6 Hannon, SD-41 Saland, SD-50 DeFrancisco, SD-54 Nozzolio, SD-61 Ranzenhofer, SD-34 Schneiderman (as do others in the Senate live in the house for free(That would be their Law firm, their sponsor)) well not exactly for free but they have a sponsor and that sponsorship is worth far in excess of what a single contributor could give via the election laws.

If this were college football, the free car (ride) would ban University of Hiscoc & BARCLAY (and the others) from the game!

Unlike an unsponsored individual, a candidate that is sponsored always has money in his/her pocket and time to donate to local candidates and civic activities. With this edge, they are able to rapidly gain political momentum and before you know it a newcomer such as SD-59, Jim Domagalski of Hiscoc & BARCLAY is upon stepping down from being Erie County Republican Chairman has their endorsement and Walla, Hiscoc & BARCLAY have another NYS Senator, joining Assemblyman William Barclay and SD-46 Neil Breslin.

Perhaps the only reason there are ONLY 20 attorneys in the NYS Senate is that there just are not enough attorneys willing to step into the political arena!

This isn’t exclusive at all to Hiscock & BARCLAY, current AG candidate Eric Schneiderman has been living under the roof of even larger 1900 Multi-national K & L Gates.

I’m convinced K & L Gates, the Barclay¬ís and the others don’t believe in the one man one vote system of government and am voting for Kathleen Rice for AG & Luke Martland SD-46!

Do what you will with the rest!
