Mayor Bill de Blasio sought to distract from NYCHA’s lead woes Monday as he blamed private housing for poisoning Big Apple kids and announced a plan to “eliminate childhood lead exposure” by 2029.
His promised lead crackdown comes on the heels of a yearlong scandal in which the New York City Housing Authority was caught lying to federal monitors about conducting lead inspections — and the city revealed that 1,160 children who live in public housing were exposed to dangerous levels of lead.
According to de Blasio, 97 percent of kids with elevated lead levels actually live in private housing. In fact, 95.3 percent of city residents live in private housing, according to city data.
