Deadly Japanese Volcano Erupts

mount-ontakeOne woman was killed and another 30 people seriously injured when a Japanese volcano erupted on today. Mount Ontake, which is popular with hikers who come to admire the fall foliage, erupted around midday and sent plumes of ash pouring down for about two miles.

It marks the first time the volcano has erupted in seven years.

“It was like thunder,” a woman told Japanese public broadcaster NHK. “I heard boom, boom, then everything went dark.”

Flights in the area were delayed as they were forced to change routes. More than 250 hikers were stranded on the mountain at one point, according to police. Read more.
