binyomin netanyahuIsraeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu sparked controversy on Tuesday after claiming that the Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini, planted the idea of exterminating Jews from Europe in Adolf Hitler’s mind.

In an address to the World Zionist Congress, Netanyahu said that the Nazi ruler had no intention of killing the Jews, but only to expel them – a claim that has been rejected by most accepted Holocaust scholars.

“Hitler didn’t want to exterminate the Jews at the time. He wanted to expel the Jew. And Haj Amin al-Husseini went to Hitler and said, ‘If you expel them, they’ll all come here (to Palestine),'” Netanyahu said, adding that the mufti told Hitler to “burn them.” Read more at Haaretz.

  1. This means that Hitler and the Nazis were even more cold than we thought. They committed genocide not for reasons of racial principle, passionate hatred or murderous psychopathy. They did it for diplomatic purposes.

  2. It makes total sense after all the murders of Jews in EY recently and the Arab stabbings of Israeli Jews. This is the mesorah that Husseini gave to the filthy Arabs.

  3. He in no way absolved Hitler, but he did something that is in practice almost as bad — rewriting history in the spirit of No Jewish Temples On The Temple Mount and The Kotel Is Muslim. There is zero evidence that al-Husseini had any influence with the Nazis at all — all the evidence shows that they neither respected nor trusted him. And the chronology is completely wrong. Months before Hitler met al-Husseini, the Einsatzgruppen were in full genocidal operation and the Belzec extermination camp was already under construction.

We correctly decry the attempts by our enemies to rewrite history. We cannot reduce ourselves to their levels. The facts on al-Husseini are sufficient to prove that he was one of the worst rashaim of the 20th century and would have been still worse had he had the opportunity. We do not need to make stuff up. We need to be honest so that we can call out others for their dishonesty.

In addition, the Arabs themselves realized that he was damaging to their cause and they totally marginalized him after 1948. I did not realize until just a few years ago that he had lived to 1974, completely alone and ignored. His memory was wiped out, which is appropriate for someone whose morals weren’t much different from Amalek.

  4. The Mufti egged Hitler on, knowing that the latter was already inclined to do just that. Both were arch-criminals. Both belonged to violent religions (Classic Islam and Nazism).

  5. I believe that there is an article from Rav Hutner zt'”l with similar sentiments, that the mufti bears the blame. Its been too many years since for me to recall, but there was a secular rebuttal from Lawrence Kaplan entitled RABBI ISAAC HUTNER’S “DAATTORAH PERSPECTIVE” ON THE HOLOCAUST: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS that references this opinion

  6. My understanding is that Hitler probably to do it eventually but with a two front war going on he had other priorities and planned to wait until after he had conquered the world. During the war he needed able bodied Jews as slave laborers more than he needed to commit valuable forces to staffing the death mechanisms. In this situation the Mufti persuaded him (and more importantly Himmler, who was much more involved at the operational level) not to put off the final solution but to get started with it asap. Thus soon after the Mufti’s visit to Berlin in November 41 Himmler called the Wannsee Conference in January 42, which was a bureaucratic exercise to direct all the relevant branches of government (who were wrapped up and struggling hard enough in fulfilling their various missions) that the final solution was as high a priority as their other missions and to coordinate and get moving on the bureaucratic processes for the final solution. When Rav Michoel Ber Weismandl approached SS contacts about bribing them to stop deportations, they consulted Himmler and received a reply that the latter had promised the Mufti not to let the Jews immigrant to Palestine and therefore any deal reached had to include provisions to ensure that any Jews released would go overseas and not to Palestine. All this is pretty well historically documented and until now the Zionist historical establishment has tried to downplay it (if not deny it) since they didn’t want it to seem like Zionism, with its threat to expel Arabs from Palestine, had a role as the trigger that started the mechanisms of the final solution moving. I’m not sure what Netanyahu’s motives are in dredging it up now but I don’t trust them all that much.

  7. “Don’t regurgitate the garbage from Haaretz”

No need to regurgitate anything. Netanyahu’s speech is online. Here is the link:

And here is his partial walkback:

He should have stopped with the accurate statements that al-Husseini supported the Shoah and that his ideology resonates with too many Arabs today. He did not have to incorrectly pin the Shoah itself on al-Husseini.

  8. “It is a historical fact that the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem al-Hajj Amin al-Husaini was an accomplice whose collaboration with Adolf Hitler played an important role in the Holocaust”

That is an opinion, not a fact. al-Husseini does not appear to have been trusted or respected by the Nazis. His Waffen SS units proved unreliable, prone to mutiny and desertion. When they were active at all, they mainly murdered Serbs, not Jews. And the exterminations were already in process when al-Husseini first met Hitler.

And the Nazis did nothing for al-Husseini’s grand Arab nationalist dreams. They maintained the French and Italian colonial rule over the Arab lands they controlled.

This is not to defend Haaretz but A-7 is no better here. al-Husseini was a cheerleader, not a coach or player.
