Disenfranchised Russian Voters Outraged At Fidler

fidler-russian-votersBrooklyn’s Russian community today expressed outrage that more than a hundred of its voters are being disenfranchised by the Fidler campaign in the closely-contested race to replace Carl Kruger in the NYS Senate.

Demonstrators gathered outside Lew Fidler’s local City Council office today to protest the Democrat’s legal maneuver to exclude well more than a hundred ballots from being counted during the Board of Election’s manual tally of absentee and affidavit votes — known as paper ballots.

“Count our votes! Count our votes!” the demonstrators chanted, brandishing homemade signs.

Almost all of the ballots excluded from the vote tally by the Fidler campaign came from Storobin-leaning, ethnically Russian districts in south Brooklyn.

“We must count every vote, period. Every voter, whatever their background, should be held to the same standard,” said David Storobin. “For the other side to exclude an entire population of voters based on their ethnicity is outrageous.”

The Fidler campaign’s move to exclude Russian voters is especially egregious considering Fidler’s own statements about counting Russian votes earlier in the campaign.

Fidler had previously introduced a resolution to the City Council requesting that Russian language be added to Board of Elections official voting materials to encourage more Russian voter participation.

Storobin campaign spokesman David Simpson said “Lew Fidler is showing that he is a total hypocrite when it come to the Russian vote. One minute, when he thinks he’ll win, he wants every vote to be counted… in Russian! And the next minute he wants exclude and disenfranchise the same people he was patronizing during his campaign.”

Technically, the voting between Republican David Storobin and Democrat Lew Fidler ended more than a week ago on March 20 — the day of the special election — but the battle wages on as Fidler’s campaign tries to disqualify as many Russian votes as possible before the Board of Election’s final election tally, expected later this week.

Heading into the paper ballot count on Wednesday, Storobin held a narrow, but solid 119-vote lead on Fidler. But Fidler, through legal wrangling, has managed to exclude at least a hundred votes from ethnically Russian election districts that went heavily for Storobin on election night.

During the paper ballot count, Fidler’s campaign has been selectively targeting Russian districts and purposefully trying to exclude their votes in order to gain on Storobin in the final tally. The goal of the Fidler campaign is exclude Russian absentee votes from regular counting procedures and throw them into a court where they can more easily maneuver to have them eliminated on a technically.
