Dr. Mordechai Sobol, a leading force in the world of Jewish liturgical music, passed away at age 67 in Atlanta, Georgia.

As director of the Yuval Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Sobol’s Yuval Foundation raised the standards of cantorial concert performance to heights seen only occasionally during the “golden years” of chazzanus in the first half of the last century.

The independent spirit of Dr. Sobol showed itself clearly in his strong and original musical language. Born in Israel, Dr. Sobol collaborated with the most prominent soloists of Jewish Cantorial music in the world, winning critical and popular acclaim.

Dr. Sobol was one of the outstanding students of Cantor Shlomo Ravitz. He held a doctoral degree in Jewish Music and was an active composer, conducter and orchestrator.

Many of his compositions were performed by the great cantors of his day. Opera-star Jan Peerce requested Dr. Sobol to write the music to the prayer “Acheinu Kol Beis Yisrael” which Peerce included in his repertoire.

He was a frequent guest on radio and television, conducting the finest orchestras in the world, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

His extraordinary technical control over the orchestra made him an historic figure in the world of Chazzanus.

Dr. Sobol spent Rosh Hashanah in the US and collapsed after the chag. He suffered from an aneurysm and was in a coma until his petirah on Motzoei Shabbos.

  1. #1 a Yid is a yid. Who are you to judge? All Jews in the holocaust had a Hashem Yinkom domom after their names no matter who they were. Why? Because a yid is a yid. And for you to sit there and judge someone else a day before Yom Kippur is shameful. Dont you want hashem fo judge you favorably ?
