rabbi-lipschutz-shalom-rubashkin-smallFrom a report by Paul Berger at thejc.com: The former CEO of America’s largest kosher slaughterhouse and meatpacking plant went on trial this week. Shlomo Rubashkin, formerly of Agriprocessors, Inc., faces almost 100 charges. In a separate trial, due to begin after the close of this one, he faces 72 charges relating to immigration violations.

If convicted, Mr. Rubashkin, 49, could spend the rest of his life in prison.

Agriprocessors, in Postville, Iowa, was the scene last May of the largest immigration raid in American history.

More than 300 workers, mostly Guatemalan and Mexican, were rounded up by the US Department of Homeland Security’s immigration arm and put into detention camps.

Agriprocessors went bankrupt following the raid.

It was rescued by Hershey Friedman, a Canadian whose company, SHF industries, bought the firm for $8.5 million. Mr. Friedman has vowed to hire local residents.

The scale of the raid sparked a blaze of such negative media publicity that the trial had to be moved out of Iowa to Sioux Falls, in neighbouring South Dakota.

Rabbi Pinchas Lipschitz, editor and publisher of the largest chareidi weekly newspaper in the United States, Yated Neeman, said Mr. Rubashkin had been scapegoated.

“I expect him to be vindicated,” he said.

Vilified in the press, Mr. Rubashkin remains a hero to some in the Jewish community, particularly in Postville, where he supported Jewish charities and schools.

Scores of Mr. Rubashkin’s Chabad-Lubavitch supporters attended the courthouse for the first day of the trial on Tuesday clutching psalm books and praying, according to the Des Moines Register. Some had travelled on a bus from New York, about 1,200 miles away.

Mr. Rubashkin sat in the courtroom with his wife and 10 children behind him, said the paper.

A number of Agriprocessors employees have already pleaded guilty.

Last month, the firm’s former chief financial officer, Mitchel Meltzer, admitted making false statements to a bank so that the firm could secure the $35 million loan. He faces a possible five-year prison term.

One month earlier, Yomtov Bensasson, another former financial employee, pleaded guilty to the same charges.

The trial continues and is expected to last up to six weeks.

Mr. Rubashkin denies all charges.

  1. I don’t understand any of you. The report is from the JC.com. In the report, it says:

Rabbi Pinchas Lipschitz, editor and publisher of the largest chareidi weekly newspaper in the United States, Yated Neeman, said Mr. Rubashkin had……

Obviously the JC did their research and found out which is the largest newspaper. what more do you want?

  2. It’s really pathetic to see Matzav readers show off their intelligence. Rubashkin is on trial for his life. Lipschitz sticks his neck out for him. Matzav sticks their necks out to make sure its readers can get the real story. And all the only comments are silly nonesense. Really, its about time we grow up, act matire and intelligent. And I Franky am a goyim and I’m telling you that you aren’t acting the way religious Jews should act.

  3. Let’s see the circulation figures. The papers have to publish them annually.

My recollection from past statements is that the Yoseid USA circulation is app. 20,000.

  4. To #13 theyeshivaworld.com used to feature Reb P. Lipshutz editoral. About the same time matzav.com opened theyeshivaworld stopped featuring him, all thow by now it may be back on.Besidres for all i know “rappin rav” might know its true but hes trying to keep it a secret I dont know who you are.

  5. i know for a fact that while matzav seems to be very (maybe too much) friendly with rabbi lipshitz’s newspaper it is not owned by yated but by some Harries who think theyre gonna make big bucks from the site
    lets see when that happens

  6. Rav Lipschutz Shlita time after time seems to be the only true Voice in Klal Yisroel when I comes to ‘Hard Times’.

It’s easy to be a fan when the team always wins. A Real fan is the one that sticks at it thru the thick and thin.

Whether it be The Courts going out against A ‘Yochid’ for Metzitza Bi’Pe. Or going out against a ‘Yochid’ for Shchita.

    It’s not a YOCHID!!!
It’s all of US! ALL of KLAL YISROEL.

And why is it that only Rabbi Lipschutz Shlita and few others like Matziv.com see it this why is some thing that bothers me!

Let’s all forget the ‘Nitty Gritty’ things and look at the bigger Picture.

    Klal Yisroel is in Court!

Were all there-He’s a Shliach Tzibbur.

And May we all be Zoiche that his and Our Tiffelous get answered By the Shomeya Tiffela.

And may we only hear Bisurous Toivos in Klal Yisroel! Amen!

    Gritty

  7. Why is it that whenever people go all out to help others, some of us attempt to degrade and discredit rather than joining?

Is it to somehow feel less guilty?

  8. Where are the facts? Who is sticking up for Rubashkin? Where are all the people whom he helped? Where is klal Ysrael? We all belong with him in court to stand up for him and with him
