egypt-adly-mansourEgypt’s chief justice, Adly Mansour, was sworn in today as acting president after a military coup ousted Mohamed Morsi, now under house arrest along with many of his senior aides. The head of the Muslim Brotherhood has also been reportedly arrested.

Following days of mass protests, crowds in Tahrir Square cheered and launched fireworks to celebrate Morsi’s removal. Military officials have refused to call the takeover a coup, instead describing it as a “national reconciliation,” and said new elections could come soon.

Former President Hosni Mubarak was also removed by the military in 2011. Read more at The New York Times.
