Mohamed MorsiMohamed Morsi, Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood-aligned deposed president, was sentenced to death Saturday for his role in a jail break during the country’s 2011 popular revolt.

Democratically elected Morsi came to power after the uprising that finally ended thirty years of Hosni Mubarak’s autocratic rule, but was deposed by the military in 2013 after just one year in office.

Morsi had been jailed during the 2011 revolt and was freed, along with thousands of other inmates, by armed men who overwhelmed the prison’s guards.
