elal“Gentlemen, and unfortunately, ladies,” the announcement featured in a satirical in-flight safety video by Jewish-American comedy writers Stephen and Joel Levinson begins. The parody of El Al’s flight safety video presents guidelines for passengers, following recent cases in which flights were delayed after some men refused to take their seats next to women.

In one of the latest of such incidents, which was first published by Ynet, passengers aboard an El Al flight from New York to Israel described their trip as an “11-hour long nightmare” due to disruptions caused by travelers during the flight.

According to the passengers who were on the plane, their fellow travelers refused to sit next to women prior to the takeoff, which not only delayed the flight, but caused actual chaos to ensue on the plane.

Tablet, the Jewish online magazine that posted the video in question, mentioned the recent cases in which passengers demanded that secular travelers change seats, and added that “to help the airline better articulate its policies, and to educate passengers on what they might expect on their 11-hour journey to the Holy Land, we turned to our friends the Levinson Brothers, who produced an in-flight safety video El Al could screen as passengers board at JFK airport.”

  1. If frum yidden think its a chilul Hashem, then if their rabbonim hold its mutar to sit next to women, why not go over to the flight attendants upon entering the plane and offer to switch with any yid who requests a seat change.this way no delay will occur and they don’t have to announce over the p.a. System asking for volunteers.

  2. The incident, if as reported, was a hillul Hashem; not the cause for levity. The mocking video also is a hillul Hashem.

  3. “The parody of El Al’s flight safety video” – please be clear, this was not made by El Al. It was made by laitzanim (comedians).

  4. I haven’t flown in years but my shita always was to not move from my seat, no matter who I am sitting next to or no matter who wanted to switch with me.

  5. I just watched the video. I didn’t think it was particularly funny. Not very offensive either. Sort of parave. Without the attention it would have gone unnoticed, like most things. Let’s save the ire for the big stuff.

  6. I’m sorry if some are offended, but it’s really a riot! So funny! It helps you to get through the tough times in life by having a sense of humor. My husband is extremely frim, ehrlich and chasidish and he never makes a scene if he’s seated next to a woman. He may ask politely if someone would care to switch. However, if they won’t, he just sits down and makes the best of it. He always tries not to make a Chillul Hashem.
