donutsTraveling to Israel during Chanukah? Don’t worry, you won’t miss out on any celebrations when traveling with El AL this year. EL AL is bringing Chanukah to the skies by serving thousands of passengers special treats and holding a nightly lighting of the menorah in the King David Lounges at JFK and Ben Gurion International Airports.Sufganiyot, fried jelly donuts, will be served in the King David lounges throughout Chanukah. First and platinum business class passengers traveling from Israel to the U.S. will also enjoy the donuts in-flight. To prepare these sufganiyot, 73 cups of cinnamon and 6,900 ounces of raspberry jam will be used in the EL AL kitchen.

For anyone not traveling to Israel this season, another great way to celebrate is to enter a new contest to win a free trip to Israel. The Israel Ministry of Tourism, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, and EL AL have teamed up to sponsor a contest in which visitors can log on to the Ministry of Tourism’s Chanukah website and light virtual candles for each night of the Yom Tov, beginning today. With each candle “lit,” visitors will learn something new about a fantastic location in Israel. At the end of the Yom Tov, visitors who have lit all eight candles will be entered to win the free trip for 2 to Israel.

Yes indeed. And the names, addresses and other personal data will be entered on yet another mailing list that can then be sold on to (perhaps) undesirable people and/or organizations.

Additionally, yet another tracking cookie will surreptitiously be placed on the contestants’ hard drives.

Remember: there is absolutely no such thing as a “free” trip. A price is always paid, somehow and somewhere.
