ElBaradei: “If Israel Attacks Gaza, We Would Declare War”

mohammed-elbaradeiFormer International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei, who had previously announced his intetions to run for the presidency of Egypt, said Monday that “if Israel attacked Gaza we would declare war against the Zionist regime.”

In an interview with the Al-Watan newspaper he said: “In case of any future Israeli attack on Gaza – as the next president of Egypt – I will open the Rafah border crossing and will consider different ways to implement the joint Arab defense agreement.”

He also stated that “Israel controls Palestinian soil” adding that that “there has been no tangible breakthrough in reconciliation process because of the imbalance of power in the region – a situation that creates a kind of one way peace.”

Discussing his agenda for Egypt, ElBaradei said that distribution of income between the different classes in Egypt would be his most important priority if he were to win the upcoming elections.

ELBaradei’s main competition is Arab League Secretary General and former Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa. Last month he discussed Egypt’s relationship with Israel. “During my term in office the foreign ministry was subject to unfavorable policies from Israel with regards to the peace agreement,” Said Moussa who served as foreign minister 1991-2001,” he said.

“We thought the peace process was like a waterwheel – endlessly turning around and around without reaching a defined point. My opinion was that we needed to be honest with the Israelis, taking determined measures within the framework of the foreign ministry’s operations. Maybe this led to a lack of agreement on all Israel related issues.”

  1. Every single one of these popular revolts in the Arab world will result in an anti Israel government.
This Rish’us is the glue which holds their frayed personae together.
Even if an old government will manage to survive, it will have to turn militantly anti Israel to prove its legitimacy.
A war with Gaza can literally turn into a regional conflict overnight.
Sadly enough, it seems to be a lose lose situation.

  2. Who is “we”? He hasn’t been elected. Egypt full well knows they’re not going to war with Israel. They hate the Palestinians almost as much as we do.

  3. Will you please get your headlines straight? He said “I will open the Rafah border crossing and will consider different ways to implement the joint Arab defense agreement.”

“…consider[ing] different ways….” is not “declare war.” You’re trying for the sensational, which is why people have become hesitant about trusting the media.

  4. The next time the arabs in Gaza do something deadly, like fire rockets, Israel should turn off the water and electricity for a while. No need to use deadly force to retaliate. They’ll get the message real quick.

  5. So if some terrorists from Libya were attacking Egypt from inside Libyan territory and the Libyan gov was encouraging it then I guess he wouldn’t do anything to defend Egypt. All these people who criticize Israel’s right to defend itself are such hypocrites. Just look at what Turkey does when the Kurdish rebels attack but I don’t hear anyone threatening war against Turkey for that. Turkey and others get a free pass from the international community to defend themselves while Israel’s every little move is condemned up and down. Well if pathetic little Egypt thinks it can stop Israel then they’re forgetting that they lost badly before and they will lose badly again.
