rav-koppelmanRav Yitzchok Dov Koppelman, the zekan roshei hayeshivos, the venerated senior rosh yeshiva of our time, is currently in New York, where he will be spending Pesach. Rav Koppelman arrived in Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon, March 16. The rosh yeshiva will be hosted in Boro Park for Yom Tov. Thousands of the rosh yeshiva’s former talmidim are expected to visit him.

Rav Koppelman, who is said to be 104 years old, is the rosh yeshiva of the Lucerne Yeshiva in Switzerland. Rav Koppelman, a prime disciple of Rav Shimon Shkop zt”l in Grodno, established his first yeshiva in Heida before World War II. In 1946, he established Yeshiva Eitz Chaim in Kopela, and the yeshiva later moved to Wilrijk, Belgium. Rav Koppelman then established Yeshiva Shaarei Yosher in Williamsburg, which later moved to and is presently in Boro Park.

Rav Koppelman later established the yeshiva in Lucerne, Switzerland. He continues to give regular daily shiurim and is in the bais medrash most hours of the day, making himself fully accessible to his talmidim.

  1. The Yeshiva in Lucerne was established by Rav Moshe Soloveitchik Zt’l who installed Rav Koppelman as Rosh Yeshiva when he was forced to give up his public position due to Israeli pressure on the Swiss government in the wake of the Yossel Shumacher affair. (Rav Soloveitchik had hid the lad for an extended period of time).

Rav Koppelman is semi-retired and has handed the reigns of the Yeshiva back to Rav Yisroel Soloveitchik, a son of Rav Moshe Zt’l.

  2. CORRECTION

Rav Koppelman did not found the yeshiva in Heide (suburb in Antwerp).
The actual yeshiva Eitz Chaim was founded years before the war in Heide and Harav Shrage Shapira HY”D was the Rosh Yeshiva there.
Rav Koppelman himself only came to Antwerp after the war in 1946 from Russia, when the original Heide yeshiva was relocated in Kapellen (suburb in Antwerp)and was then appointed to be the Rosh Yeshiva there by the Kehila of Antwerp

  3. #5:
correction. Rabbi Kopelman is not semi retired and #2 has not handed the reigns to Rav Yisroel Soloveitchik.

  4. to #5: ‘Rav Koppelman is semi-retired and has handed the reigns of the Yeshiva back to Rav Yisroel Soloveitchik, a son of Rav Moshe Zt’l.’ What/who are the sources for the misinofrmation you are disseminating? The Rosh Yeshiva arrives at the yeshiva at night, 6:00-7:00am and stays until late at night, delivers a daily shiur, weekly schmussen, chumash rashi etc. ably assited by the Rosh Yehiva ‘s only son, Rabbi Moshe, a great person and talmid chochom in his in his own right.

  5. Brooklyn mother! you neglected to mention that the Rosh Yeshiva arrives to yeshiva early morning for shachris minyan. He is perfecly aware which boys are attending shachris on time and which boys aren’t. He still goes around checking the rooms EVEN those on upper floors.
