El Al plans to stop using its 400-ton Boeing 747 Jumbo Jets next year, Haaretz reported. They are to be replaced by the humpless, more fuel-efficient Boeing 787s. United Airlines and Delta also laid off their last 747s.
The Jumbo Jet broke a record when one of Israel’s fleet airlifted 1,087 Ethiopians to Israel in 1991. This was the largest number of people ever to fly on one plane.
In 1992, a 747 freighter-plane crashed after takeoff at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and killed 43 people.
