Reshet Bet [Kol Yisrael], Israel’s national radio station, announced today that Esther Pollard is seeking an urgent meeting with Israeli president, Shimon Peres, prior to his departure to the USA. The text of Esther Pollard’s letter to President Peres follows below. Peres leaves for the US on Sunday evening for a meeting with President Barack Obama.
Related to the Reshet Bet news item, Sima Kadmon (Yediot Achronot’s most highly-respected political analyst) in her weekly column today asks the question, “Will Shimon Peres close the circle for Pollard?” Kadmon points out that Peres was the prime minister when Pollard was arrested for spying for Israel 26 years ago. She points out that there is now a wealth of support for Pollard’s release by senior American officials including such notables such as Henry Kissinger, George Schultz, Michael Mukasey, Dan Quayle, John McCain, James Woolsey, Dennis Deconcini and others. Kadmon asks the question that is on everyone’s mind: Will Peres take advantage of all of this support at his meeting with President Obama on the eve of the Passover holiday season to seek the release of an Israeli agent abandoned by Israel more than a quarter of a century ago? It would be fitting, as Kadmon suggests, for Peres to close the circle now by bringing Pollard home. Peres’ office had no comment.

To President Shimon Peres
Re Request for a brief but urgent meeting prior to your departure to the USA
Dear Mr. President,
At the instruction of my husband, Jonathan Pollard, I am turning to you with his request that you receive me for a brief meeting prior to your departure to the US.
Jonathan has asked me to personally deliver a private message from him before you leave to meet with the president of the United States. As well, in the context of this meeting I would like to update you on Jonathan’s medical condition.
I thank you in advance for your swiftest possible reply,
