The excitement Friday on the main street of Meah Shearim at a new kosher ice cream parlor was as big as the excitement surrounding the arrival of the international chains the people of Israel have been longing for.
More than 6,000 people gathered outside the ice cream store, waiting for a free sample for six hours, from Friday morning until just before Shabbos. People began crowding outside the store at 6 a.m., waiting for its doors to open.
“Zisalek”, a new kosher ice cream store, offers 37 flavors, frozen yogurt and American waffles to an area which has never had its own ice cream parlor.
Masses of people gathered and police were forced to close the street to traffic.
The ice cream chain’s owner is Yaakov Halperin.
The excitement was the result of the chain’s decision to offer a free cone of ice cream in honor of the opening. More than 300 liters of ice cream disappeared within two hours, and a truck had to be sent to the Alfei Menashe factory to bring fresh supplies.
Halperin made a promise to open six more stores this year.
