A former Nazi guard who served at the Auschwitz death camp has been charged with 170,000 counts of accessory to murder. From January 1942 to June 1944 the suspect worked at Auschwitz, according to a statement from the Detmold state court in Germany.

The suspect’s name has not been disclosed.

German officials allege that he specifically worked at Auschwitz-Birkenau, which is the part of the camp where most of its 1.1 million victims were killed. His lawyer denies that he was involved in the killings or worked at Birkenau. Read more.

  1. The New Yorker magazine had an interesting article on this.

They seem to be now arresting people who worked in Auschwitz under any capacity. Until now, they were only prosecuting those who were “directly” involved in killing. Others, who performed clerical duties, were left alone and lived openly in Germany. Many never hid the fact that they spent the war years in Auschwitz.
