lithuania Cemetery-VilnaA message thanking Lithuanian Chief Rabbi Chaim Burshtein for his efforts on behalf of the Jews buried in a mass grave in Siauliai (‘Shavl’) was issued by Asra Kadisha and by the Conference of Academicians for the Protection of Jewish Cemeteries.

On July 14, Rabbi Burshtein issued a statement regarding “the ongoing humiliation of the dead’’ taking place in a construction area near the Lithuanian city of Siauliai close to the Latvian border. A highway building project uncovered a mass grave of Jews murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust.
As a result of Rabbi Burshtein’s widely distributed memo, Jews from Vilna and elsewhere met with Lithuanian officials and prevailed on them to halt construction activities.

Rabbi Lazar Stern of Asra Kadisha, who issued a statement two days ago against the excavation of the mass grave, told Matzav.com that the area was reportedly a known Nazi killing field, and there were possibly other mass graves in the area.

Today, , Matzav.com has learned, the City announced that they halted the excavation of the mass grave. The news came as a relief. At the same time, the situation is being monitored to assure that the site is appropriately preserved, and the excavated remains are re-interred in accordance with halachah.

The U.S. state Department had been monitoring the situation through the Office of Holocaust Issues and through the US Embassy in Vilnius.
