Israeli, Lithuanian and American archeologists excavating Vilna’s 17th-century shul compound discovered the shul’s green and brown brick bimah. Two of the shul’s mikva’os were found last month.

Constituting the heart of Vilna’s Jewish life for centuries, the compound included the famous Strashun Library, 12 shuls and batei medrash, mikva’os, the Vilna Gaon’s beis medrash and a Jewish community council building. It was looted and burned by Nazi forces and destroyed and replaced by a school during the Soviet era.
