idfProfessor Sergio Della Pergola, a demographics expert from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said on Thursday that the changing birthrate among different sectors in Israeli society may lead in the future to a point where half the people who reach conscription age will have an exemption from military service, according to a report by Elad Benari for Arutz Sheva.

“The percentage of children reaching the recruitment age and having an exemption in the chareidi-religious and Muslim sectors is continually increasing,” Prof. Della Pergola told Arutz Sheva. “Currently it stands at 25 percent, and I predict that in 25 years half of those who reach conscription age will have an exemption.”

He added that believes that if the Draft Law changes, it will also affect the birthrate among the chareidim and the Arabs, saying, “There is no doubt that there is an indirect connection between integrating populations within the mainstream of Israeli society and the world view [of those populations] when it comes to social life, economic and demographic patterns.”

“According to our information, equal burden also brings with it integration into economic and social life. Today the average is about three children per family, and equality can lead in the long run to a point where there will be fewer demographic differences between populations.”

The analysis comes as the members of the coalition continue to be divided over a new Draft Law. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that he would be willing to impose personal sanctions on hareidim who evade service. He made the comments during talks with the leaders of the coalition parties.

  1. And how many Israelis won’t enlist in the real life saving endeavor of Torah? Some won’t give even a few hours a week to save the Jewish people. Or, sacrifice their desires for the greater good. Some will die for a chance to live like a goy, but not live as a Jew. Rather inconsiderate to push the burden for survival onto a small frum minority, eh? Share the burden: keep the mitzvos!

  2. Do you really believe that a draft law will change the birth rate of chariedim?

That is just stupid altogether. Chariedim don’t decide how many children to have, Hashem does. To say that they would have less children is to say that one of mans’ laws is believed and feared more than one of Hashems’ laws.

    Ridiculous.

  3. “There is no doubt that there is an indirect connection between integrating populations within the mainstream of Israeli society and the world view [of those populations] when it comes to social life, economic and demographic patterns.”

And therein is the real goal of the move to draft Chareidim, in fact the real goal of zionism itself: to force the integration of Chareidim into Israeli (zionist secular state-as-religion) society.

“And for slanderers, let there be no hope”

  4. Finally some one admitting the real reason behind this. The military brass don’t really want the headache of Chareidim in the army. The secular politicians are terrified of our high birthrate. They hope to get Chareidim to “modernize” via the IDF melting pot. The melting pot was always part of the stated Zionist strategy. That’s why women are drafted as well, even though they could save lots and lots of $$$ if they would just hire civilians for the majority of the jobs that the young women do.
