facebookFacebook is becoming a major factor in marriage breakdowns and is increasingly being used as a source of evidence in divorce cases, according to lawyers.

The social networking site was cited as a reason for a third of divorces last year in which unreasonable behaviour was a factor, according to law firm Divorce-Online.

The firm said it had seen a 50 percent jump in the number of behavior-based divorce petitions that contained the word ‘Facebook’ in the past two years.

Mark Keenan, managing director of Divorce-Online, said: ‘Facebook has become the primary method for communicating with friends for many people.

‘People contact ex-partners and the messages start as innocent, but lead to trouble.

Thirty-three percent of the 5,000 behavior petitions filed with the firm in the past year mentioned the site.

  1. a totally false title – “a third of divorces last year in which unreasonable behaviour was a factor” is NOT a third of divorces – unless unreasonable behaviour is a factor in every single divorce??

  2. A third of all unreasonable behaviour based divorces where at least one spouse decided to use an ONLINE law firm– a totally non-representative sample…

  3. Seems like Rabbi Zecharia Wallerstein’s constant railing against Facebook is on target, like everything else he says…

  4. To reiterate what several people have said, this article is meaningless. Of course Facebook is mentioned more often now – more people use Facebook now than 2 years ago. That does not mean that those couples would not be seeking a divorce without Facebook.

  5. It is an old joke that when there is a divorce on the grounds of incompatibility. No one gets divorced because of external factors. The external factors are just a symptom that the relationship has gone sour. Once people believed relationships were worth working on and that such efforts would improve the individual and the family. Not any more.
