Those holed up because of the “historic” blizzard shutting down most of the Northeast were forced into a social-media nightmare early Tuesday. Facebook and its subsidiary Instagram, as well as Tinder, which relies on a Facebook log-in, suffered a global outage on both its Web and via mobile apps, but have since returned to normal service.

Hacker group Lizard Squad tweeted about the outage, leading to speculation that it might have been responsible, but Facebook said it believed its engineers were to blame.

“This was not the result of a third-party attack but instead occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems,” a Facebook spokeswoman told the BBC. “We moved quickly to fix the problem, and both services are back to 100 percent for everyone.” Read more at BBC.
