french-friesFrom the bottom of our artery clogged hearts, thank you. The Food and Drug Administration proposed regulations today to eliminate artificial trans fat from the U.S. food supply.

The measures would deem hydrogenated oils (where trans fats come from) no longer safe. And since the Institute of Medicine says there is no safe level at which to consume artificial trans fats, companies will have a hard time challenged the proposal during the 60-day comment period.

The FDA says the rules may prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths a year. Read more at the New York Times.

  1. Why can they get away with that but Bloomberg can’t ban large soda?

The answer is simple. Unlike Bloomberg the FDA actually does have jurisdiction over our food supply. Hence the name FOOD and Drug Administration.

  2. I’m very excited. There used to be a brand of trans free shortening that came in the same types of tubs as Crisco for the same price. Now there’s great motive for the return of such a product, competitively priced. Sure, once you add the sugars, flour, etc. this isn’t exactly healthy, but it’s a good start, and ok in moderation.
