smoke-detectorLast year, New York City recorded the fewest fire deaths in the history of record keeping by the FDNY and commissioner Sal Cassano believes education is the reason.

“The simplest thing that anyone can do to practice fire safety at home is to have a working smoke and carbon monoxide detector,” said Cassano today.

In nearly every fatal fire that the NYPD investigates, there is a non-working or non-existent smoke detector.

“Overwhelming majority of our fire deaths. That’s why we’re out here trying to get that message out to say it’s so important for you to have that detector working. So, that if you do have a fire, you’ll get awoken and you’ll get out,” said Cassano.

It’s recommended that you check your smoke detectors twice a year when you change your clocks.

Duracell has donated 80,000 nine-volt batteries to be distributed by the FDNY this weekend.

We set our clocks back one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday.
