Almost three years to the day that he shot and killed Trayvon Martin, the Justice Department announced its investigation into George Zimmerman found “insufficient evidence” to charge him with violating Martin’s civil rights.

“Our decision not to pursue federal charges does not condone the shooting that resulted in the death of Trayvon Martin and is based solely on the high legal standard applicable to these cases,” Acting Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta said in a statement.

Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder in Florida in 2013. Since then, he’s had several scrapes with the law for everything from road rage to domestic assault, but was never charged in any of them. Read more at Department of Justice.
