Fifth Arrest Made in Robbery at Rav Shteinman’s Home

rav-shteinman2A fifth arrest has been made in the theft of a tremendous sum of money from the home of Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman reported first here on back in January.

Police have arrested an 18-year-old in a rented apartment in Tel Aviv in connection with the robbery. This follows the arrest of two brothers, a 19-year-old and 22-year-old of Bnei Brak, and a 20-year-old resident of Modi’in Illit last week, and the arrest of a fourth suspect earlier this week.

At the apartment in Tel Aviv, police found drugs and a relatively large sum of money, but still far from the amount stolen from Rav Shteinman’s home at 5 Rechov Chazon Ish in Bnei Brak.

The theft occurred two months ago, on Thursday, January 14th. At 10 p.m., Rav Shteinman returned from a trip to Yerushalayim and Beitar to discover that there had been a break-in at his home. At least $50,000 in cash and checks in the amount of hundreds of thousands of shekels – funds received by Rav Shteinman to be distributed, as he does every Rosh Chodesh, to heads of mosdos and tzedakos – were stolen.

All detainees are vehemently denying their involvement in the affair.

Today, the 20-year-old suspect of Modi’in Illit was released to house arrest.

All five young men are “Shababnakin,” a term used to describe troubled Israeli youth who stray from the path of their parents.

According to one source, the young men were nabbed upon trying to cash some checks in Bnei Brak, though it appears that there is additional evidence linking the suspects to the theft.

  1. Not surprised there is no cash found. $50,000 divided up by 5 =$10,000 each. Two months have passed so that’s $5,000 a month. When a person buys drugs that money probally goes very fast.

  2. Please don’t say anything mean about these boys. They are troubled youths with bad childhoods who were likely on drugs and didn’t know what hey were doing. Be dan lkaf zchus. Its not their fault.

  3. “didn’t know what hey were doing” dan lkaf zchus????

You’re joking right? The only problem these boys have is that they live in a society where working and education are frowned upon. Every kid cannot be a Chazon Ish. The mayor of B’nai Brak stated in Mishpacha that 20% of the kids in B’nai Brak are at risk. That’s a MAJOR problem!

  4. I feel we should raise money for their defense as 2 says, it wasn’t their fault.I sure hope Matzav puts in an effort for these guys.

  5. as #7 says we need to start a legal defense fund.
that is bidei adom — as for bidei shomayim i think we should create a g’mach in their honor . i understand that r’meir baal hanes may have some extra funds available.
