A seven judge High Court panel is to hear an appeal of two restaurateurs against an earlier court ruling which supported maintaining the rabbinate’s kashrus monopoly. Unlike his predecessor Yehuda Weinstein, current Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit supports the monopoly to prevent misleading of the public.
A big fighter against the rabbinate’s monopoly is Rabbi Aharon Leibowitz, whose Hashgacha Pratit organization provides supervision to twenty-nine businesses. It avoids mentioning the words “kashrus” or “supervision” in any of its certificates to avoid violating Israeli law.
