Finance Minister: Greece Won’t Pay Debt

debtGreek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis confirmed that Greece won’t make its $1.6 billion debt payment due to the International Monetary Fund on Tuesday, but said he was holding out hope that the country would reach a last-minute aid deal that could stave off default and push back the date of the next debt payment.

The country will hold a referendum Sunday to decide whether to accept an austerity program proposed by European Union leaders. The prime minister’s office said Tuesday that it would seek a new two-year bailout from the EU to cover all financial needs and restructure debt. Read more.
