camp-simcha1Glen Spey, NY – A large blaze engulfed a portion of Camp Simcha on White Road in the Town of Lumberland Shabbos morning.

The first call came in to Sullivan County 911 at around 5:30 a.m. Several fire departments were called to the scene, where they battled the inferno that destroyed a double bunk house, from which all campers had been safely evacuated, boruch Hashem. The campers’ belongings, however, were destroyed in the fire.

It took firefighters about an hour-and-a-half to knock the blaze down.

“There were 15 girls sleeping in the bunk,” a source at the camp told Matzav.com. “All were evacuated in less than a minute from the bunk. Within three minutes from the rest of the camp. Bentzi, the maintenance fellow, ran back into the raging fire to double-check that none of the girls were still inside. No one was hurt, but those 15 girls’ belongings were lost. The other campers and staff gave them their stuff.”

Camp Simcha is the renowned a medically supervised overnight camp for children with cancer or other serious illnesses run by Chai Lifeline.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, though it is believed to have been an electrical fire of some sort.
