knessetintYisrael Beiteinu MK Anastassia Michaeli gave birth to her eighth child, a boy, early this morning. Michaeli has thus become the first MK in the history of the House to give birth while in office. Nurit Elstein, the legal counsel to Israel’s parliament, recently handed down her opinion that MKs are not entitled to maternity leave. That’s because employer-worker relations do not exist between the lawmakers and the Knesset, or between the Knesset members and the public.

“I’ll work as usual, maybe from home,” she told Haaretz two months ago. “Usually I would bring my children with me to work after giving birth. I’m not interested in sitting at home with the infant. When you have a child every year it’s different…I can do everything at the same time. As far as I’m concerned, I would take him to the plenum too. All you do is sit there, you don’t have to do much.”
