FJCC Leadership Meets With Leading Speaker Candidate Melissa Mark-Viverito

fjcc-melissa-mark-viveritoBrooklyn, NY – Leading candidate for City Council Speaker , Melissa Mark-Viverito was hosted this morning by the Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition (FJCC), in a meeting coordinated with Councilman-Elect Chaim Deutsch, and Councilman Brad Lander.

After a private intensive discussion with senior FJCC leaders and the elected officials, Ms. Viverito participated in a hour-long discussion with a broad and diverse group of leaders from community organizations, non profits, and educational institutions. Over 50 leaders representing a myriad of issues of deep importance to the Jewish Community actively participated.

Organizations represented at the meeting included: Agudath Israel of America, COJO of Flatbush, Ohel, Chasdei Lev, Flatbush Hatzolah, Keren Aniyem, Chai Lifeline, Shomrim, Chaverim, Bina, Bikur Cholim of Boro Park, Shema Koleinu, Masbia, and members of multiple Community Boards, various Yeshiva leaders, shul representatives and leading businessmen and women under the umbrella of the Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition (FJCC.)

Councilwoman Viverito proclaimed, “In conversations that began several weeks ago with Councilman-Elect Chaim Deutsch and the leadership of the FJCC, I have learned an enormous amount about the Orthodox Jewish Community, and as I move forward, I will continue to seek the guidance and advice of Councilman-elect Deutsch and the FJCC.  I am embarking on a mission to learn about the diverse needs of all 51 council districts in NYC and I’m very proud to come here today.”

Ms. Viverito explaining why this was the first stop in her outreach to the broader Jewish community citywide, “I appreciate and will never forget that Chaim Deutsch and the FJCC were there for me as I began my journey for Speaker of the City Council. I value this relationship.”

The meeting chaired by FJCC chairman Josh Mehlman was addressed by Councilwoman Viverito, Councilman-Elect Chaim Deutsch, Councilman Brad Lander, and Conference of Presidents Vice Chairman and FJCC Honorary Chairman, Malcolm Hoenlein. The assembled group then had an opportunity to engage Ms. Viverito on community concerns.

Councilwomen Veverito said, “more than coming to talk, I really came to listen.” Issues discussed included; education, children with disability, affordable housing, crime and safety, protecting the social safety net for struggling families, aid for Yeshivas including security, health and more.

The event was hosted by Shimon Lefkowitz, FJCC executive board member, at the beautiful Waterford by the Bay facility.

  1. We have to thank City Councilman Brad Lander for all his help in helping the frum community in his quiet unassuming way. He is a real asset to the frum community . He is a total mentch as well–almost unheard of in politics. Now he is a real position of power with new speaker–hopefully that translates into real assistance to the mosdos especially with upk program for the community.
