Leah Cohen, 38, of Boca Raton, Fla., wanted to go out for dinner with her family during a visit to New York for a family wedding, but she was concerned that her special needs son, Ari, 13, would upset other diners due to his uncontrollable flailing and grunts and that his behavior would attract uncomfortable stares.

The NY Daily News reports that Leah reached out to the owner of Kasai — a kosher Hibachi eatery in Flatbush — with the help of Elan Kornblum, who runs the popular Facebook group Great Kosher Restaurant Foodies.

“I told her she could come whenever she wanted,” Kasai owner Victor Ebadi, 30, recalled. “I’d send any customers away if they had a problem.”

Cohen didn’t want to inconvenience other diners and was worried how they’d react, so Ebadi offered to open the restaurant an hour before the dinner rush Tuesday for Ari and the rest of the family.

“Your son is our son!” he told Cohen. Read the rest of the story at the NY Daily News.

  1. B”n next time I’m looking to try a new restaurant I’ll try Kasai. Kudos to them for the way they treated a special needs kid and his family.

  2. May h-m help these people in 1, getting this into a trend, 2, they should have soooo much hatzlacha! after sooo much bashing the jewish community and religion, we are desperate for showing our shining side as well! Thanks for helping all of klal yisroel!

    • Great illustration of what looking at something with an “Ayin ra’ah” means. Fortunately, we know you’re just joking.

  3. Kol Hakavod to this restaurant and to the very many other establishments on and around the Avenue J/M area in Flatbush. My adult disabled daughter is a daily regular in many of these restaurants and she is always welcomed with open arms. I am amazed at their chesed; her wheelchair takes up a lot of space and I wonder at their generosity being that it takes away from their very busy traffic flow. Not only is she welcomed and fussed over, but Bennys on ave J host her birthday parties complete with cake and hats, and Pizza world on Cony Island Avenue hosted a party for her there as well.
So thank you! Its so very much appreciated

Through the years restaurants like Bennys and Pizza World have hosted birthday parties and other parties for her, complete with hats and cake. I have wondered at their hospitality being that her wheelchair takes up a lot of space and the restaurants are very busy, but they dont mind at all.
    With many many thanks
