umanAs Rosh Hashanah nears, preparations for the annual visit of some Yidden to the kever of Rav Nachman of Breslov begin. The tradition of the annual pilgrimage to Rav Nachman’s gravesite in Uman, Ukraine, is rooted in a tradition that began during his lifetime, when thousands would travel to be with him and learn from him during Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah and Shavuos.

Every year, many followers from Israel and around the world continue the tradition and fly to Uman to pray by his kever around the time of Rosh Hashanah. This year, as Binyamin Gabbai of Derech Tzadikim (a company that organizes trips to the kever in Uman during this time of year) told Arutz Shevah that he is convinced that all previous records will be broken.

“This year is a special year and there will likely be more people flying out,” said Gabbai. “The Israeli Airports Authority has issued 18,000 flight permits. Every year in the past, twelve flights went out to Uman. This year there will be nineteen.”

Gabbai added that ticket prices to Uman this year are cheaper. “Because of the large supply prices have dropped. In past years, expensive flights back to Israel immediately after the holiday, cost $1,200. This year you can get [a flight for] $900. Less sought-after flights can cost $750.”

He spoke of a new phenomenon where Jews buy apartments in Ukraine so they have a place to sleep when they visit during the holiday. “There are many individuals who purchase apartments there. They rent throughout the year and live there during Rosh Hashanah.”

  1. I’m sure Reb nachman would want the yeshiva bills to be paid first and keep them all open then having people come spend money to visit his grave

  2. to number 2

what about all the vacations people are taking (flying all over the world and staying in lux. hotels…) and the designer name clothes people are wearing? I think those cost a lot more than the 900 or less these people are putting out to get closer to Hashem (in their way)

  3. Every chassidic group has mass gatherings to promote solidarity and recharge the spiritual batteries of the chassidim. Misnagdim have their ways of doing the same.

  4. WELL, I DON’T KNOW 2 MUCH OF HASIDUS, BUT THEIR RABBI SAID 2 GO, SO THEY GO! SOUNDS GOOD 2 ME!

  5. ”I THINK YOU GUYS KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT BRESLOV AND ABOUT GOING TO UMAN, LOOK UP IN BRESLOVER SEFARIM [OR SITES] THE BIG INYON OF SPENDING ROSH HASANAH BY THE REBBE, AND THEN FIND OUT HOW MANY YIDDEN BECAME CLOSER FROM BEING THERE, THEN WE CAN SPEAK MABE” YOU CAN FIND OUT MORE ABOUT UMAN AND BRESLOV BY GOING TO http://WWW.BRESLOV.ORG/

  6. Is there anything wrong with saving up Money to go to Uman instead of Miami? NO, In fact a Miami Vacation will cost way more then an Uman Rosh Hashana Vacation, Free food and almost free Accondaions.

  7. I agree. If a parent wastes his time and money going to Uman & his tuition is not paid up to date, his kids should be immediatly expelled untill balance is paid in full!

  8. With flights, sleeping arrangements, meals, and transportation (about a three-hour drive from the airport to Uman) it’s about $2,000, but Rebbe Nachman promised that you’ll get the money back (similar to the money spent for Shabbos food).

And to #1: Have the gedolim spoken out against it? No they have not.

  9. 2 all by dear jewish brothers you all must come to uman as well, as Reb Nachman said Ish Bar Yedar (no one should fail)just like any mitsva in the torah we must go to great length to comply like with $,family, emotions etc. this is the mithsva of VCHOL ASHER YORUCHA. you all must come. even if you dont belive in the Rebbe. Reb Nachman said, Rosh Hashana was given to me as a gift from Hashem, evryone’s Rosh Hashana depends on me. Like it or not Reb Nachman WILL work for you on Rosh Hashana, might as wel do as requested.
