After 16 years during which Rav Chaim Kanievsky did not leave Bnei Brak for the kibbud of sandek at a bris, the gaon traveled today to Kiryas Sanz in Netanya to serve as sandek at the bris of the Sanzer Rebbe’s ainkel.

The Rebbe, who as Matzav reported earlier in the week recently fell off a ladder and suffered a fracture, was confined to a wheelchair. When he entered the room, he was greeted by the Chassidim with the singing of “Chasdei Hashem ki lo samnu.

The bris was held in Heichal Rosenberg in Kiryat Sanz.

Rav Eliyahu Shmuel Schmerler was honored with amidah l’brachos. The Sanzer Rebbe, elter zaide, was honored with reciting the brachos.

The baby, a son of R’ Yekusiel Yehuda Halberstem, was named Shmuel Dovid.

After the bris, the Rebbe and Rav Chaim made a lechayim and exchanged brachos.

  1. Sorry, but this is factually incorrect. 15 months ago on Rosh Chodesh Adar II, Rav Chaim was sandek at a bris in Asaf Harofeh Hospital which is located in Tzrifin, a town not too far from Kfar Chabad. As a grandfather of the baby, I was there.
The reason why Rav Chaim broke with his practice of not leaving Bnei Brak for that bris was because the baby’s aunt, Sarah bas Dina, the kallah who was injured in the #402 bus accident, was hospitalized there and Rav Chaim wanted to give chizuk to the family.

  2. Simply amazing! It’s so beautiful to see Jewish people doing Jewish things… (i.e. when someone gives you the honor of being sandek, accepting it and going out of your way to be do it…) We could learn a lot!

    • Yes. Achdus in Kllal Yisroel and especially amongst our Gedolim is the best possible thing. We also had a little while ago, Rav Shteinman Shlita traveled to Yerushalayim to join the Gerrer Rebbe by a Chasunah. Me Kiamcha Yisroel?

      • Fellow Yid — I think David was “trolling” us a little bit and making fun of (chas v’shalom!!) one of the Gedolei Yisrael….

    • That Bris never happened at the end. The baby was yellow. Instead they brought in a family from Bnei brak in another car, and had a Bris in Bet Shemesh for their newborn son. As wierd as this sounds, it is true. Check out the pictures, and ask around. It had to do with a certan shul that opened. Whatever.
