In order to get Hurricane Harvey relief funds, Dickinson, Texas, residents have been asked to agree to not boycott Israel, The Dallas Morning News reports. The storm, which made landfall Aug. 25, did catastrophic damage along the Gulf Coast and hit Dickinson especially hard. The city started accepting applications last week for money to rebuild homes and businesses from the Dickinson Harvey Relief Fund.

A clause in the application states: “By executing this Agreement below, the Applicant verifies that the Applicant: (1) does not boycott Israel; and (2) will not boycott Israel during the term of this Agreement.” Despite claims from the city that it is following the law, ACLU of Texas Legal Director Andre Segura says the requirement is clearly unconstitutional and “an egregious violation of the First Amendment.” She added, “The First Amendment protects Americans’ right to boycott, and the government cannot condition hurricane relief or any other public benefit on a commitment to refrain from protected political expression.” Read more at THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS.

  1. I hate to say this, but the ACLU seems to be 100% correct in this case. If a welfare recipient refuses to patronize a store because of its owner’s race, religion, gender, etc. can they be removed from public assistance? I sure don’t think so, and having all recipients declare that they will not discriminate in that matter is a step beyond that.

    • A local government boycotting of Israel is not just a passive refusal of some individuals to purchase some items, they aggressively use the power of their local government to force every affiliated vendor and contractor into cutting ties with anyone deemed to be not anti Israel enough. This is not a case of the federal government attacking individual rights, this is a case of the federal government trying to reign in the local governments overtaken by the oppressive liberal-fascists. The fascist-socialists always use their fascist methods to steal our freedoms, then whine and cry when they get beaten at their own game.

      • Please read the full article. Neither the federal govt. nor the state govt. is involved here; it’s the city govt. that’s trying to compel private citizens to pledge not to boycott Israel.
