Scholars worldwide are concerned that many Dead Sea area manuscript fragments sold since the late 1990s may be faked. They say that the market became saturated with them since 2002, Times of Israel reported. Many hoodwinked buyers were private evangelical Christians, but even the Museum of the Bible, set to open this November in Washington D.C., has half a dozen fragments which are suspect.

With some individual pieces going for close to a million dollars, forgery was a worthwhile pursuit and a continuation of a trend that began in the 1950s after the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

To stop the phenomenon, most Israeli experts want Israel to alter a law that allows the sale of archeological artifacts discovered before 1978.
